Tips and Tricks

Tip 1: When piecing fabric for the backing of a large quilt, stitch along the lengthwise straight grain for the most strength. This will help prevent sagging if the quilt is to be hung.

Tip 2: When adding borders to a quilt top, do not just sew a strip on and then trim at the bottom. This will result in a quilt top that is not square, which will cause puckering and fullness when being quilted. Instead, measure the quilt through the middle in both directions (don't just go by the measurement in the directions). Cut the borders to these sizes and ease in the quilt top as you stitch.

Tip 3: Always make a label for your quilts! Think of all the hours you have spent, even a simple quilt, and invest in a few moments to relay information about it. Your posterity will thank you!
